I learned a very interesting word totday in German class: “vogelfrei”, which could literally be translated to “free as a bird”, but in fact means “outlawed” or “exiled”. Unsurprisingly this got me thinking about SnK and also considering the uses of “Vogel” in Attack on Titan.
- Vogel im Käfig, the death song of Eren’s mother, is the first use of the word Vogel. “Vogel im Käfig” can also be used to describe the Shina trio.
- Vögel der Freiheit literally translates to “Birds of Freedom”, though we would probably say “Wings of Freedom”. This describes the second “state” of the children in SnK. They have provided themselves with fleeting freedom by joining the Survey Corps.
- However, that freedom doesn’t last long. After discovering the true identity of Historia, the Survey Corps becomes targeted by the Military Police. In the latest chapter, Erwin is actually arrested and there are wanted posters distributed of Levi. Because of this, the Survey Corps sind vogelfrei; They are outlawed.
